We currently have a great assignment for a Structural Bridge Engineer with one of our top clients.  Our client is a full-service consulting firm offering a wide array of Program and Construction Management, Project Controls and Engineering services.


Job Responsibilities

 

The Structural Bridge Engineer is responsible for planning, developing and designing highway and pedestrian bridges and other infrastructure components for the government, institutional, commercial, airports and transportation related projects.  The Structural Bridge Engineer will report to one of Project Managers and will also work jointly with a Bridge Engineering Practice Lead to ensure the overall success of assigned projects.  The Structural Bridge Engineer will work on multiple projects ranging in value from a few thousand dollars to over one million dollars in design fees and will work with assigned Project Manager to ensure an efficient, timely and quality project.  Responsibilities include:

  • Researches and advises on the best engineering solution to meet with a client's needs and budget
  • Investigates sites to determine the most suitable infrastructure improvements for proposed construction
  • Mentors junior structural engineers, designers and engineering technicians
  • Works within the established project schedules
  • Coordinates with other engineering disciplines, architects, landscape architects, environmental consultants and other project consultants as directed by client’s Project Manager
  • Establishes detailed programs for the coordination of engineering field work activities
  • Conducts feasibility and planning studies
  • Performs engineering analysis of design options and prepares associated reports
  • Responsible for the preparation of engineering calculations and technical reports required for the design of projects and the development of construction drawings and specifications
  • Produces detailed designs and documentation packages including plans, specifications, cost estimates and construction schedules for the construction and implementation of bridge design and rehabilitation projects
  • Performs load ratings of bridges and other transportation structures
  • Participates in bridge safety inspections as required
  • Attends project meetings as required
  • Assists with managing and monitoring the shop drawing submittal and RFI process as it pertains to client’s contractual scope of work during the construction phases of assigned projects
  • Works with client’s Project Manager to ensure project compliance with all local, state and federal regulations applicable to project’s design
  • Assures that all correspondence, submittals, drawings, specifications, reports, etc. are produced with a high level of professionalism
  • Coordinates and cooperates with other client Engineers and Technical Leads in multi-discipline contracts to assure the success of the assigned project
  • Promotes a work environment that fosters good employee morale with emphasis on mutual respect
Job Requirements
  • Specific qualifications for the Structural Bridge Engineer role include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field with an emphasis on bridge / structural design is required; Master’s degree is preferred
  • Must be a registered professional engineer in at least one of the following, or able to obtain by reciprocity:  Virginia, Maryland or District of Columbia
  • Candidate will have an aptitude for computing and design and must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • 4+ years of Structure and Bridge Engineering experience; VDOT, MDSHA or DDOT experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience using Microstation or AutoCAD is required
  • Proficiency with BrR (AASHTOWare Bridge Rating) software, STAAD, MDXSoftware, DESCUS, LARSA  4D or other bridge design / load rating software is preferred
  • This position occasional field visits, 20% field and 80% office, or as necessary
  • Successful completion of the FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety of In-Service Bridges course is preferred
